Dean's Message

The Adelaide Law School was founded as a separate Faculty in 1883, almost two decades before federation. It is the second oldest Law School in Australia. The School presently has a student body of about 1400, and about 30 full time academic staff. Many students and staff have moved through Adelaide Law School, and many of our law graduates have enjoyed fine, and in some cases - highly distinguished careers in Australia and overseas.

Our School has seen many changes in its 120 year history. One change in the past decade is a discernable shift in the conception of the staff-student relationship. Students are no longer treated as subservient repositories of wisdom handed down from on high, but as well informed consumers of educational services. At the Law School we welcome this development, and at the same time commit ourselves to educational integrity and the highest academic values. Our entry standards are and will remain high. Students at Adelaide are taught and assessed in accordance with the highest standards.

There are few disciplines that are more challenging or satisfying than law. It is indispensable for civil society and a satisfying basis upon which to build your life. By securing a place in the School you have achieved an important milestone, and we look forward to helping you achieve your cherished goals. I hope that your studies at Adelaide Law School will be stimulating, challenging and ultimately rewarding. You can look forward to graduation from this Law School with a set of skills and understanding that will stand you in very good stead for the remainder of your professional life.
