General Information
I. University of Adelaide
The University of Adelaide Union
The Union brings the student community together by providing the essential non-academic services that make University life enjoyable. Services range from entertainment to clubs, to counselling.
The Postgraduate Student's Association (PGSA)
All postgraduate students are automatically members of the PGSA upon
enrollment. The PGSA organises a range of activities (including social
activities) for its members. It plays an active role in the decision-making
processes of the University through its representation in the various
levels of University committee hierarchy, from the School Board to the
Board of Graduate Studies, Academic Board and the University Council.
It also plays an important advocacy role for its members.
The Student's Association (SAUA)
The role of SAUA is to represent students and their interests to the
Union, University, state and federal governments and the community in
general, and to foster a full and rigorous student life by organising
on-campus activities.
Sports Association
The Sports Association supports more than 40 clubs, providing a wide
range of competitive and recreational sporting activities catering for
all levels of ability and interest. Activities range from gliding to tai
chi to snow skiing, and instructional classes are run in conjunction with
the University's Centre for Physical Health.
Centre for Physical Health
The Centre for Physical health provides a wide range of physical activities
and services aimed at fostering good health and fitness among students
and staff. These services include fitness classes, weight training, fun
runs, massage, physiotherapy, squash courts, aerobics and keep-fit classes,
judo, badminton, volleyball and many other sporting and exercise opportunities.
There is a small annual fee for the use of the facilities.
Club Association
This
association is for non-sporting bodies, including cultural, political,
religious, faculty and social clubs. There are over 70 clubs, including
a number of international student clubs.
Counselling Service
The major services provided by the Counselling Service are individual,
relationship and family consultations, and professional assistance with
study problems and other anxieties. Male and female counsellors are available
for consultation. All appointments are completely confidential.
Student Health
The comprehensive facilities of the Parklands Medical Practice include confidential
medical consultations, immunisations, referral to specialists, sexual
counselling, contraceptive advice and liaison with other welfare services
and University staff.
Accommodation
All international students may reserve temporary accommodation for their
first few weeks in Adelaide, as long as it is booked in advance of their
arrival. Further information can be obtained through the International
Accommodation Officer, International Programs Office (for contact details,
see Enquiries and further information).
There are a number of residential colleges that are affiliated with the
University. Kathleen Lumley College caters primarily for postgraduate
and mature-age students. Rental accommodation is also widely available,
either on a room only or share house basis, or with a family.
All forms of accommodation arrangements, including rental accommodation,
can be made through the University's Student Housing Officer upon arrival
in Adelaide.
II. University of Mannheim
Enrolment
Enrolment
for the MCL program is organised by the International Student Office in
close cooperation with the Faculty of Law and the Studentenwerk, the Student
Welfare Organisation.
Student Organisations
Campus life at the University of Mannheim is marked by the active participation
of students in numerous university organisations and clubs. The official
student organisation established by the University Charter is the General
Student Commission, which represents student positions to the Vice-Chancellor
and the administration.
Studentenwerk
The Student Welfare Organisation (Studentenwerk) ensures student welfare
in close cooperation with the University and also caters for students'
social needs. Among its main responsibilities are the acquisition of affordable
accommodation and the promotion of students' academic interests.
The Institute for Sports
This organisation meets the recreational needs of Mannheim's students.
Every week thousands of students participate in sport courses offered
by the Institute. From training in the gym to competitive sport to relaxation
techniques or meditation, the Institute offers expert coaching in a wide
range of activities.
Services
The Studentenwerk runs a child care centre and a nursery, as well
as a psychological counselling service and a legal counselling service.
Further services include the provision of casualty insurance and international
student identity cards.
Dining Hall
Students can eat inexpensively in the University dining hall and cafeterias,
which are also run by the Studentenwerk. The dining hall offers lunch
every weekday with a selection of different menus and the cafeterias offer
additional menus and snacks. The central cafeteria also offers dinner
during the semester.
Transport
Once enrolled in the MCL program in Mannheim students can, if they show
their student identity card, buy a reasonably priced 'student's ticket'
which allows them to use public transport all over the region for the
entire semester.
Accommodation
The Studentenwerk runs a number of University owned dormitories
within Mannheim, most of them located not far from the University. Applications
for these dormitories usually outnumber the places offered. However, the
International Student Office, the Akademisches Auslandsamt each year
reserves a certain number of places in these dormitories. For students
taking part in the MCL program the Akademisches Auslandsamt has agreed
to reserve up to ten places in university accommodation each year. Early
application is recommended. Beyond that, the Studentenwerk also has a
private room location service.
