Services

Users with Disabilities

In recognition that users with disabilities may have special difficulties with accessing the full services and resources of the Law Library we welcome the opportunity to assist you personally.

  • Assistance with basic reference enquiries, catalogue searches and electronic resources and reference material is available from the Law Library Desk either in person or by telephoning 8303 5558.
  • Individual orientation tours and an introduction to the Law Library, may be arranged by contacting the Law Librarian on 8303 5348.
  • Books may be retrieved from the shelves for users with disabilities, however 24 hours notice to do so would be appreciated.

Access

The Law Library is located on the ground floor of the Ligertwood (Law School) Building which may be accessed by wheelchair directly from North Terrace. There is a lift which provides access from level one (street entrance) of the Ligertwood Building to the Library floors on the ground and lower ground levels. Keys to access the lifts are provided to students with disabilities. There is also ramp access to the two floors of the Library from the underground car park area adjacent to the Ligertwood Building, which may be used by prior arrangement.

Seating

There are a number of large open table study areas throughout the Library which provide convenient access for wheelchairs.

Emergency Exits

Emergency exits are located at the northern and southern ends of each floor of the Law Library, with ramp access at the northern end of the Library. Users whose disability may make it difficult to use the emergency exits should notify library staff at the Law Library Desk of their presence in the building, and of their likely movements within the Library. This is especially important in the evening and at weekends when there are not many people in the Library.

Telephones

Library staff can provide a desk telephone upon request.

Photocopying

If you are unable to use a photocopier because of a disability, the Library will do photocopying on your behalf. Fill in the details and sign the Copyright declaration on a Paging/photocopy service request form for each item you need and hand the forms to the Law Library staff on the Desk. You should allow a minimum of 24 hours, Monday-Friday, for your request(s) to be processed

Loans

Users with disabilities, including visual impairment and dyslexia, who are referred to the Library by the Disabilities Liaison Officer, may obtain a Double loan period Library Card entitling them to double the normal loan period.

If another user places a Request on an item that has been borrowed for a double loan period, the loan period will be reduced to the minimum loan period for that item. A loan may be renewed up to four times, provided nobody has placed a Request on the book.

Other Services

The Barr Smith Library has special computer equipment and software for people with disabilities. For further information please check the Barr Smith Library webpage on Assistance for Users with Disabilities.

Honours Students

Study Areas

The Law Library has available 12 group study rooms for students in their Honours year, located on the ground floor, southern end of the Law Library. These study rooms are generally made available from beginning of Honours work to completion of the dissertation.

To secure a study room, please enquire at the Law Library Desk.

Please note that every effort will be made to make a study room available for all Honours students, however as it is dependant on the number of students enrolled, allocations will probably be granted on a shared basis. All study rooms are locked rooms and a key is made available upon deposit of $5.00 with the Law Library.

Normal library rules apply with these rooms, so please refrain from eating and drinking. If you find that you don't really require the study room please tell us so that the room can be made available for another student.

Borrowing Privileges

Normal borrowing privileges apply, in addition students may retain a small number (no more than 10 volumes), of Law reports, Statutes and Journals (bound volumes only) for longer than one day, in their study rooms.

Bound volumes that you intend to keep for longer than a day must be signed for at the Law Library Desk by filling in the Loans card in the back of the volume. A yellow slip is inserted in the volume clearly marking it as out on loan to an Honours student. This material may then be kept in your study room but must not be removed from the Law Library.

Please note that any Law reports, Statutes or Journals found in your study room and not signed out on loan, will be reshelved back into the collection.

Loose parts of Law reports, Statutes and Journals may not be borrowed in this way. They must be signed for at the Desk as a normal Reserve item. Digests, Indexes and other Reference material may not be held in the study rooms and should be read in the Reference area.

All material signed out for use in the study rooms must be returned through the Book Return Shute at the Desk. You are responsible for this material until the loan is properly discharged, so such material must not be left on a trolley or returned to the shelves.

Inter-Library Loans

Inter-Library Loans are available to Honours students and are managed through the Document Delivery section of the Barr Smith Library. Refer to the Barr Smith Library's Document Delivery webpages for further information.

A normal inter-library loan costs $12.00 plus $1.20 GST although longer articles and faster service will cost more. Please refer to the Barr Smith Library's Document Delivery Charges webpage for more information on charges.

Photocopying

Honours students are each allocated $50 worth of photocopying credit from the Law School. With respect to photocopying there are some points to remember.

  • One copy only, for use in study or research.
  • Never copy more than 'reasonable portion' (10%) of a book as defined by the Copyright Act 1968, or more than one article from a single issue of a journal.
  • Do not copy what you can reasonably buy.

Reference and Research, Online Databases, etc.

The Law Library retains or has access to all the major reference and research tools for researching Australian and comparative law. Much of this material is available in printed form in the collection with an increasing collection available online through subscriber only databases or freely available on the Internet.

Access to much of this material is outlined on the Law Library web page under Legal Research and 'Electronic Resources' however it cannot be totally comprehensive. The Law Librarian would be pleased to assist you in your research so please feel free to contact the Law Librarian to make an appointment (phone 8303 5348 or email: peter.jacobs@adelaide.edu.au).
