Cases and Courts

For caselaw of countries other than Australia, see Other Countries.

Case Citators and Digests

Using case citators and digests is usually the most efficient and effective way to research case law. This is because these databases distill information about a case and this editorially added data is what is searched, rather than wading through vast tracks of full-text decisions.

Search tip! How and why to research using case citators and digests?

CaseBase via LexisNexis AU

  • a case citator and digest database of Australian case law and important UK and US decisions that have been cited by Australian courts
  • searches by party name, judgment date, judge, court, citation, legislation considered, words & phrases, catchwords
  • includes an index of Australian law articles with references to cases and legislation discussed

FirstPoint on LawBook Online (Important note: Information on LawBook Online's transition to a new look platform called Legal Online)

  • a comprehensive case citator and digest database of Australian reported cases since 1825, and unreported cases since 1999
  • cases are arranged into and may be browsed by topic
  • case digests link to the full-text decision where reported in the CLRs, FCRs, FLRs, SASRs, ACrimRs, and unreported decisions in recent years.

Australian Cases by Court

This list comprises the major courts and the major reports series for the courts. It is not comprehensive and does not cover all Australian courts and tribunals, nor all the law reports series. For a more comprehensive list refer to the Holdings List of Law Reports, Legislation, Treaties and Journals. The Law Library holds the major law reports for all Australian courts and tribunals, and the major foreign common law countries, including New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States.
