Biography
Paul Babie holds a BA in sociology and politics from the University of Calgary, a BThSt from Flinders University, a LLB from the University of Alberta, a LLM from the University of Melbourne, and a DPhil (Law) from the University of Oxford. His LLM thesis was entitled The Implementation and Operation of Transferable Water Entitlement System in Alberta: Applying the Victorian Experience to a Similar Socio-legal Setting and was published by the Government of Victoria. His doctoral thesis was entitled Crown Land in Australia. He is a Barrister and Solicitor of the Court of Queen's Bench of Alberta, Canada, and between 1992 and 1994 was an Associate-practising natural resources law, corporate/commercial law and securities law-with what is now Borden, Ladner, Gervais, Canada's largest national law firm. Between 1994 and 1995 he was Lecturer in Law at the University of Melbourne, and from 1996 until 1998 he was Tutor in Law at St Catherine's and Balliol Colleges, Oxford. In 1999 he was appointed Lecturer in Law at the University of Adelaide, where he teaches property, property theory, Roman law, native title, and torts.
Paul is an active and widely published researcher, working mainly on law and religion, especially the intersection of private property theory and Christian theology and the nature of religious law. He is an expert in the history of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Australia and the canon law of the Eparchy for Ukrainian Catholics for Australia, New Zealand and Oceania; he regularly consults on these matters.
In 2002, Paul was ordained a Sub-deacon, in 2003 a Deacon, and in 2004 a Priest of the Ukrainian Catholic Church. He sits on various Committees and bodies of the Ukrainian and Roman Catholic Church.
Paul is married and he and his wife have a wonderful daughter.
